Why is it so important to use your dental benefits before year-end?  If your dental insurance plan runs on a calendar year, you may not be maximizing the benefits you’re paying for.  There are few ways to make sure you are utilizing the benefits to which you are entitled.

Use it or lose it.

Many insurance plans that run on a calendar year have benefits such as cleanings and x-rays that are just sitting there unused until the clock strikes midnight on December 31. Take care of your oral health and maximize your benefits by making sure you schedule two cleanings per year.  Periodic preventive care can detect early signs of periodontal disease, decay, oral cancer, and other problems.

Get dental treatment before your deductible resets.

The deductible is the out-of-pocket amount you must pay before your dental insurance company will reimburse your provider for certain covered services. Your deductible typically resets when your plan starts anew on January 1st. If you’ve already met your deductible for the year, now is a good time to get more expensive restorative procedures like crowns taken care of. If you wait until January, you will most likely have a higher out-of-pocket expense. Not only that, delaying treatment can result in needing costlier dental work down the road.

Use up your annual maximum.

An annual maximum is the limit on how much your insurance plan will pay for dental treatment within one full year. This amount varies by insurance company, and some premium plans do not have annual maximums. The yearly maximum usually renews every year. If you have unused benefits, they do not roll over.

Use or lose your FSA funds.

Another good reason to take care of dental treatment now is to spend the remaining balance in your flexible spending account (FSA). An FSA is a pre-tax account for medical and dental costs that may be offered by your employer. If you don’t use all of your FSA contributions by the end of the year, you lose them.
